Guide

A gradient in Minecraft means the text color shifts letter by letter from one color to another, like "Welcome" starting orange and ending pink. The game has no real gradient; each letter is colored on its own, and what you see is a run of similar colors.

This needs hex colors, the six digit color like #ff8800. Hex works in text from Minecraft Java 1.16 onward, so you're not stuck with the 16 old fixed colors. Each plugin and server setting has its own way to write it, such as &#ff8800 or MiniMessage.

How to make gradient text in Minecraft

Say you want the word Spawn to go from red to yellow.

1. Count the letters. Every letter needs a color. Spawn has five letters, so you need five colors between red (#ff0000) and yellow (#ffff00).

2. Work out the middle colors. A hex color has three numbers: red, green, blue. Between two colors, change each number in equal steps. Here only green moves, from 00 to ff: 00, 40, 80, bf, ff. That gives #ff0000, #ff4000, #ff8000, #ffbf00 and #ffff00.

3. Put each color before its letter. In &#rrggbb format it looks like this:

&#ff0000S&#ff4000p&#ff8000a&#ffbf00w&#ffff00n

4. If the plugin has MiniMessage, write it shorter. In plugins that understand MiniMessage, all of the above becomes <gradient:#ff0000:#ffff00>Spawn</gradient> and the plugin works out the letter colors. Just make sure your plugin or server panel supports MiniMessage.

5. Add formatting separately. Bold and italic are &l and &o and must come after each letter's color, because a new color clears the old format. In MiniMessage you just wrap the whole text in a <b> tag.

6. Try it in the server MOTD. The vanilla MOTD in server.properties only knows the 16 § colors, but hex works on Paper, Spigot and Velocity. If it doesn't show correctly on your server, check your version and the plugin's supported format first.

Quick guide to the Minecraft gradient text tool

Instead of doing all this by hand, you can do it much more simply with this tool:

  1. Type your text in "متن" (text).
  2. In "رنگ‌ها" (colors) enter each hex color, and use "افزودن رنگ" (add color) for more. "معکوس" (reverse) flips the order.
  3. If you have no colors in mind, pick a preset from "پریست" such as "غروب" (sunset) or "رنگین‌کمان" (rainbow).
  4. In "قالب‌بندی" (formatting) turn on bold, italic, underline, strikethrough or magic.
  5. Choose the format your plugin uses in "قالب خروجی" (output format) and copy the code.

Common Minecraft gradient text mistakes

  • Wrong format: code made for MiniMessage shows up as plain text in a plugin that lacks it. Match the format to your plugin.
  • Gradients on an old version: below Java 1.16, hex colors don't work.
  • Text getting too long: each letter carries several characters of code, and fields with a length limit may cut the text.

Frequently asked questions

With MiniMessage, like <gradient:#ff0000:#0000ff>text</gradient>. In plugins without MiniMessage you put a separate hex code before every letter, like &#ff0000H&#ee0011i.

Hex colors work on Java 1.16 and later. The vanilla MOTD in server.properties only knows the 16 § colors; for hex you need Paper, Spigot or Velocity.

&#rrggbb is read by plugins like EssentialsX and is written for each letter. MiniMessage has a gradient tag and works out the letter colors itself, but the plugin has to support it.

Minecraft's font draws Persian letters separate and left to right, so they don't connect. Gradients look better on English text.

Use several colors in a row in the gradient: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Each plugin has its own format, so copy the output that matches it.
