Guide

The MOTD (Message Of The Day) is the two lines under your server's name in the Minecraft server list. It is the first thing a player sees of your server, so its color and layout affect who joins.

Color and style in a MOTD come from color codes: the § character followed by a letter or digit. In plugins and proxy config files people usually type & instead because it is easier to enter.

How to make a colored MOTD for a Minecraft server

Say you want the first line gold and bold and the second gray.

1. The codes. Colors are 0 to 9 and a to f (for example 6 gold, 7 gray, c light red). Styles are l bold, o italic, n underline, m strikethrough and k scrambled. r clears all changes. Write the color before the style, because a new color wipes the earlier style.

2. Two lines. A MOTD has two lines, separated with
. More than two are not shown.

3. Writing it in server.properties. In this file write every § as §:

motd=§6§lMy Server
§7Survival and fun

4. Centering. Minecraft doesn't center for you. Put a few spaces before the text to push it to the middle. The server list row has a limited width, so a long line wraps to the next row.

5. Hex colors. On Paper and proxies a custom color is written as §x and six digits, each preceded by §, like §x§f§f§0§0§0§0. Plain vanilla only knows the 16 basic colors.

6. Other software. BungeeCord keeps the MOTD in config.yml with &. Velocity uses velocity.toml and MiniMessage format. A Bedrock server has one line, written in server-name.

Quick guide to the Minecraft MOTD generator

Instead of doing all this by hand, you can do it much more simply with this tool:

 1. Pick a template from "قالب آماده" (ready template), such as classic, survival, event, maintenance or hex color, or type your own "خط ۱" and "خط ۲" (line 1 and 2).
 2. Select text and apply a color or style from "رنگ و استایل" (color and style). For a custom color use "رنگ دلخواه (hex)".
 3. Use "گرادیانت خط فعال" (gradient on the active line) or "رنگین‌کمانی" (rainbow) for a smooth color change, and "وسط‌چین کردن هر دو خط" (center both lines) to align.
 4. The pixel width of each line shows under it; keep it within the limit.
 5. Choose your server software (Vanilla, Paper, BungeeCord, Velocity or Bedrock) and use "کپی خروجی" (copy output) to paste the text into the right file.

Common Minecraft MOTD mistakes

 • Typing § directly in server.properties: write § instead.
 • A line that is too long: it wraps to the next row and breaks the MOTD.
 • Not resetting with r: a style keeps affecting later text; clear it with r when needed.

Frequently asked questions

In the motd key of server.properties. Save and restart the server. On BungeeCord and Velocity the MOTD is set separately in config.yml or velocity.toml.

Usually the file has a raw § or you typed & in server.properties. In that file write § as §; & only works in plugins and proxy files.

Use l for bold, o for italic, n for underline and m for strikethrough, for example &l after a color. k makes text scramble and animate.

Yes. When players connect through BungeeCord or Velocity, the server list shows the proxy's own MOTD, and the motd of the server behind it is not shown.

Separate the second line with
. To center, put spaces before each line's text until its width is near the server list's width.

A plain vanilla MOTD only has the 16 § colors. Hex needs Paper or a proxy; for Vanilla output the tool converts the color to the nearest of the 16.
