Villagers in Minecraft trade for emeralds. Each villager has a few fixed or random trades depending on its job, and more unlock as it levels up from Novice to Master. A good trade, like a Mending book or an enchanted tool, is a very fast way to get strong.
Most of the important choices are made at the start: which job you give a villager and when you make the first trade.
How to trade with villagers and find the best price in Minecraft
Say you want a Mending book from a librarian.
1. The job site block. A jobless villager takes a job when you place its block nearby: a lectern for a librarian, a blast furnace for an armorer, and so on. So you choose the job by choosing the block.
2. Check the trades before the first purchase. A new villager's trades are random, but they don't lock until the first trade. If what you want isn't on the list, break the job block and place it again so the trades are rolled again.
3. Locking and leveling. After the first trade, that level's list is fixed. Every trade gives the villager XP, and when it has enough it levels up and unlocks new trades.
4. Enchanted book prices. A librarian prices a book by the enchantment level: for level L it is between 2 + 3×L and 6 + 13×L emeralds, doubled for treasure enchantments like Mending, and capped at 64. Mending I therefore lands between 10 and 38 emeralds, pricey but well worth it.
5. Curing a zombie villager. Cure it with a Splash Potion of Weakness, then a Golden Apple. The discount applies right after the cure, shrinks over time, and curing again has no effect.
6. Hero of the Village. You get this effect after you finish a raid, and it discounts every trade item; the stronger the effect, the bigger the discount. A price never goes below one emerald.
When you defeat a raid, villagers drop items from their first and second trades for you as gifts. Many players build redstone and lapis farms around this.
Quick guide to the villager trade viewer
Instead of doing all this by hand, you can do it much more simply with this tool:
- In "شغل ویلیجر" (villager job) pick a job and see its job block and the trades at each level.
- Or type an item or enchantment name, like Mending or Ender Pearl, in "جستجوی آیتم" (item search) to see which villagers sell it.
- Turn on "ویلیجر درمانشده (zombie villager)" (cured villager) and set "Hero of the Village" to a level to see discounted prices.
- Read each trade's "موجودی" (stock) and "XP ویلیجر" (villager XP).
Common villager trading mistakes
- Trying to trade with a green-robed villager (nitwit): a villager in a green robe never takes a job and won't trade; a job block only employs an unemployed villager (no work clothes).
- Hitting villagers: every hit lowers your reputation with that villager and raises its prices for you; killing one also hurts your reputation with nearby villagers, and the iron golem attacks you.
- Moving the villager away from its job block: a villager must reach its job block to restock. If it can't, its trades run out and aren't refilled.
